Why 'Drowsy But Awake' Doesn't Work For Every Baby

It's one of the most repeated pieces of baby sleep advice going, drilled into every new parent like scripture. And for a lot of families, it simply doesn't work. If you've tried it and it ended in tears, yours and the baby's, you weren't doing it wrong. The advice was just never built for your baby.

Sound Familiar?

  • You've tried it exactly as instructed and watched your baby go from drowsy to wailing the second their back touched the mattress.

  • You've wondered what's wrong with your transfer technique (when actually the advice was the mismatch, not you)!

  • You've read three versions of the same tip and felt increasingly like you're missing something obvious.

  • You've given up on drowsy but awake but still feel a guilty every time you rock or feed to sleep instead.

Why It Fails For So Many Babies

The advice assumes every baby can learn to fall asleep independently if given the chance. In reality, humans are carry mammals, and most babies, (but especially more sensitive or intense temperaments) need active co-regulation to move from awake into sleep, not just the opportunity to figure it out solo. Drowsy but awake one tool in the kit, that will work for babies with a very specific temperament. It is not a universally good way to get babies to sleep independently.

What To Try Instead

  • Notice how your specific baby responds, some genuinely do settle with minimal help, and that's fine too if it's working without distress.

  • For babies who struggle with it, more support at the transition to sleep (rocking, feeding, holding) is meeting a real need, providing them with something they're actively seeking.

  • You can still work towards more independent sleep later, gradually, without needing to force it from the start. Using things like habit stacking can provide a great foundation for independent sleep down the line.

  • Watch temperament cues, a highly sensitive or intense baby usually needs more, not less, support to shift states.

  • Drop the guilt attached to whatever's actually working right now, a method that gets everyone rested isn't a failure just because it doesn't match what that woman on instagram told you.

If You Want A Plan That Fits Your Baby

If generic advice keeps not working, it's usually because it wasn't built for your specific baby in the first place.

In 1:1 coaching we start from your baby's actual temperament and build from there, so you're working with your baby's specific needs, rather than fighting it. You can try the free temperament quiz or get in touch for more help.
